Updating Insulin Deliveries

Through A Diabetes Insulin Pump

As the epidemiology of Diabetes Mellitus expands, different medications and treatments have emerged. The evolution of technology to treat diabetes mellitus has focused on the convenience of the patients who use it.

Insulin pumps are one of the most recent and advanced types of diabetes treatment technology. They deliver insulin very efficiently. Prior to insulin pumps, tuberculin syringes were used to measure the amount of insulin to be delivered. Diabetes insulin pumps are much more convenient and accurate than syringes.

The pump is sometimes likened to an artificial pancreas since it allows lifestyle flexibility and strict glucose control in the body without causing too much hindrance in a patient’s activity.

The anatomy of an insulin pump consists of a pump reservoir (insulin cartridge), a computer chip that serves as the controller for the amount of insulin required, and a battery-powered pump. Disetronic and MiniMed in the United States are currently marketing diabetes insulin pumps.

The pump works efficiently with the simplicity of its assembly. First, the pump is connected to a minute plastic tube or infusion set that has a soft plastic needle at one point as a passageway for insulin. The needle is inserted under the patient's skin -- usually at the abdomen. The insulin is then delivered continuously 24 hours a day. The plastic needle or the cannula requires changing every two days. The tubing may be detached from the pump when swimming or taking a bath. The amount of insulin administered is programmed through the computer chip and is delivered at a basal rate. Insulin rates differ though, depending on the presence of strenous activites like exercise and sports.

The efficiency and convenience of insulin pumps is becoming well known. Already, over 50,000 people with diabetes are utilizing them and positive reports are coming in every day. If you or your loved one suffers from diabetes, ask your doctor about the advisability of utilizing insulin pumps. Please note that each patient's needs are specific and unique, so it is imperative to seek and adhere to trustworthy medical guidance in this matter.
